A veteran entertainment journalist is contesting "Ploning's" P20 million production cost. His reason is that most of the professional actors worked for free and the film does not have the values of a P20 million movie. Want a reality check? Lead actress Judy Ann Santos was paid her regular fee which she decided to invest in the production. By her own account, she was pampered by giving her a chef who prepared her South Beach Diet. That's expensive Hollywood-style star pampering, right? Gina Pareno was paid her regular rate. Lucas Agustin, the Cuyo native who plays Siloy, was also paid. How did I know? When I asked him this question during the "esposada" at the Xavierville Clubhouse, he told me in a gentle voice, "Oo kuya pero may kulang pa."
When asked to comment, publicists Leah Salterio and Oliver Oliveros denied the overstatement accusation. Lea stated: "Not true. The logistics of filming the entire movie in Palawan explains it all. It's a quality film given the gloss of a movie produced by a major outfit." Oliver agreed: "Actual production cost is P20 million. That's the truth. He has to consider logistics of live sound and color grading on 35mm (not digital)." The veteran journalist's big mistake was assuming "Ploning" was shot with digital camera. It was not. Director Dante Nico Garcia and director of cinematography Charlie Peralta used a 35mm camera. This meant bringing to far-away Cuyo island all the cameras, lighting and sound equipment & the crew who operated them and the raw stock of films.
But the last say on the issue must come from Panoramanila Pictures Co.: "It's actually way above P20 million. We just rounded it off." In effect, "Ploning's" cost is understated.
