When it rains, it pours.
This month – and for the next three or four months – Karylle will be busy with several projects, starting with the lead role in STAGES' production of "West Side Story," even as she launches her new album, which took two years to complete.
In "West Side Story," Karylle will play the female lead role of Maria, alternating with Joanna Ampil. It is Karylle's first time in the theater after eight years. She was last seen in the role of Princess Sapphire in Trumpets' staging of "Little Mermaid" in 2000. Playing the role of Tony is singer Christian Bautista.
Because eight years have passed since she was last onstage in a major musical such as this one, Karylle has to get used to it all over again. She last watched the movie (starring the late Natalie Wood in the role of Maria) a year ago, and fell in love with both the story and the music.
"West Side Story," which is loosely based on William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," but set in 1960s New York, is famous for such song as "I Feel Pretty," "Tonight," "One Hand, One Heart," and "Maria." "It's such a dramatic story, so it appeals to the actress in me. Plus it has such lovely songs, and I love old songs," says Karylle.
"Although nakakapanibago talaga because it's been eight years since I've been onstage. But I look forward to doing it. I look forward to the challenge."
She also looks forward to working with Christian. This is their first time together onstage, "but we've been friends a long time (because of Trumpets), so there shouldn't be too much problems adjusting," says Karylle.
The show goes onstage in September, and will run until October 2008 at Meralco Theater. Call Ticketworld (632) 891-9999 or STAGES (632) 818-1111 loc. 225 for ticket inquiries.
