Is the Press Release Dead or Evolving?

"Day by Day: The Producer's Perspective" at www.godspellblog.com

The press release, one of public relations’ (PR) oldest tools, isn’t retiring any time soon. In fact, it’s been christened with a new name: the social media release (SMR). While the classic press release is aimed at landing on the desks of news executives at the most influential news organizations, the SMR has expanded its distribution channels; besides eyeing editors-in-chief and television news producers, it now also targets the social media groundswell – a "point-blank shot" at news consumers.

PR practitioners in the theater community have never felt more empowered than they do now, especially with the vast potential of sending out their own stories via social media. Pitchengine.com, an online tool that teaches PR practitioners how to create and share story pitches, says it best: “Skip the press release. Create a pitch and share your news, announcement or promotion directly with your customers [consumers]. Publish it to search engines, social networks, your website and more... It’s your story: Go tell it.”

Recently, Ken Davenport, a theater blogger and the lead producer of the upcoming Broadway revival of Godspell, has been making the most out of social media platforms.  In addition to distributing press kits and holding press visits at rehearsals, Davenport has put up a blog named “Day by Day: The Producer’s Perspective,” which follows a day-by-day account of the seminal musical’s much-anticipated return to Broadway. He publishes his own stories, his stage manager’s reports, the show’s online marketing toolkit, and his plan to record a cast album, among other things that heighten the excitement even more among theater fans. The transparency between the show’s producer and potential audience is certainly encouraging.

On the other hand, Leviathan Lab, New York’s newly-established Asian American theater company that’s set to transplant William Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night from Italy’s Adriatic Coast centuries ago to Hong Kong’s harbour in the ‘60s, has been publishing its own stories as well through blog and video postings on its official web site, and through its digital newsletter that’s distributed to a subscriber database.

The age-old press release is “how you get the ball rolling, but it’s what you do with it that makes the difference.” (PRWeb blog, 2011)

The press release isn’t dead after all; it’s evolving.

Co-written with Jude Cartalaba

NEWPORT CITY, PASAY, Philippines, September 27, 2011 -- Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical The Sound of Music, which was adapted into a highly successful full-length film in 1965, and won five Academy Awards including Best Director, Best Sound, Best Musical Score, Best Film Editing, and Best Picture, is set to hit the center stage of Resorts World Manila's Newport Performing Arts Theater on October 15 'til December 11.

Joanna Ampil, an international theater actress who played Kim in Miss Saigon and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, takes on the most coveted role of Maria, while the equally stellar stage performer Cris Villonco plays the same role at some performances. Both are joined by a powerhouse cast that include Audie Gemora, Ed Feist, and Jon Joven alternating as Captain George von Trapp, Pinky Marquez and Sheila Francisco alternating as Mother Abbess, and Pinky Amador and Lynn Sherman alternating as Baroness Elsa Schraeder .

At a press conference, Roxanne Lapus, the musical's director, points out two messages for the Filipino audience: The Sound of Music would reiterate that "the best way to serve God is to follow His will," and it would pay "to be a person of integrity."

For the performances, Manila Philharmonic Orchestra provides live orchestral music, conducted by Maestro Rodel Colmenar with back-up vocals by Lyn Fabella of Wind Song; independent filmmaker Paul Soriano produces the visual effects and digital videos.

Shows are on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.rwmanila.com; for ticket inquiries and reservations, visit Ticketworld outlets or Resorts World Manila Box Office.

Exclusive Photo Flash: Llana, Jacobs, Desai et al. Photo Shoot for SUITES BY SONDHEIM - BroadwayWorld.com

by Oliver Oliveros, BroadwayWorld.com

New York, September 26, 2011 -- BroadwayWorld.com has visited Jose Llana (...Spelling Bee, Wonderland), Adam Jacobs (Lion King, Les Miserables), Angel Desai (Company), among others' publicity photo shoot for PhilDev Celebrates Broadway: Suites by Sondheim, a concert at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center on November 7 that will feature Tony Award-winning actress Lea Salonga, and an impressive roster of Filipino-American Broadway stars; and that will benefit Philippine Development Foundation USA (PhilDev), a non-profit organization that supports community and entrepreneurship programs in the Philippines. Check out some of the behind-the-scenes photos HERE.

Suites by Sondheim will highlight American musical theater legend Stephen Sondheim's works, which include musical selections from Anyone Can Whistle, Company, A Little Night Music, Merrily We Roll Along, Saturday Night, Sunday in the Park with George, Sweeney Todd, and West Side Story.

"...I wanted to do something that has never been done before. I've been immersing myself in the magnificent worlds of Shakespeare, Stoppard, and Sondheim in the past few years. Their works are rarely expressed by Filipino-American artists...," said Victor Lirio, the concert's co-producer and director. "...there's only one other theater icon, besides Sondheim, who's constantly revived and re-investigated: Shakespeare. Both of their works are timeless. The lyrics in Sondheim's music -- for example, "Finishing the Hat" from Sunday in the Park with George, "Send in the Clowns" or "The Miller's Son" from A Little Night Music, and "Being Alive" from Company -- are like Shakespeare soliloquies. So, one must pay attention to not just the music, but the language as well. The exciting challenge in presenting a pastiche of Sondheim music in a concert setting is contextualizing the material, giving them both lyrical and narrative form. But, I've an amazing cast to work with. I'm very excited!"

Besides Llana, Jacobs, Desai and Salonga, the cast will  include T.V. Carpio (Spider-man), Catherine Ricafort (Mamma Mia!) Joan Almedilla (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables), Ali Ewoldt (Les Miserables, West Side Story), Rona Figueroa (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables), Lydia Gaston (The King & I, Miss Saigon), Orville Mendoza (Pacific Overtures, Miss Saigon), Paolo Montalban (Pacific Overtures, The King & I), Emily Morales (South Pacific), Jennifer Paz (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables), Aaron Albano (Wicked, Mary Poppins), Alan Ariano, Emy Baysic, Billy Bustamante, Liz Casasola, Marc dela Cruz, Albert Guerzon (Mamma Mia!), Brian Jose, Jaygee Macapugay, Mel Maghuyop, Jake Manabat, Adam Marcelo, JP Moraga, Lora Nicolas, Diane Phelan, Chris-Ian Sanchez, Joanne Javien, Ester Barroso, Karl Joseph Co, Enrico Rodriguez, Deedee Magno Hall, and Melissa Singson.

For tickets, visit Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center box office located at 70 Lincoln Center Plaza in New York City, or visit www.lincolncenter.org, or call CenterCharge at 212-721-6500. Ticket prices are $100, $150, $250, and $500. Limited patron/VIP subscriber seats at $1,000, which include a pre-concert VIP reception, are available; contact Rene Encarnacion at rene@phildev.org or 650-288-3937. 100% of the proceeds will benefit PhilDev.

New York, September 23, 2011 -- One of Broadway's current blockbusters, Wicked, will premiere at Singapore's Grand Theater, which is located within Marina Bay Sands, on December 7; its limited engagement season will run until January 29, 2012. Rumor about Broadway actress Shoshana Bean, who had performed in the Broadway production for a year, sharing the role of the green witch, Elphaba, with Australian theater actress Jemma Rix, who's currently playing Elphaba in the Australian touring production, remains unfounded; full cast will be announced soon.

Wicked tells the untold story of the Witches of Oz, based on the 1939 film musical, The Wizard of Oz, and on the 1995 George Maguire novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, in a grand scale production: Long before Dorothy dropped in the Land of Oz, two other girls forge a heartwarming friendship: Elphaba, born with emerald green skin is smart, fiery, and misunderstood; Galinda/Glinda is beautiful, ambitious, and very popular. Wicked follows their remarkable odyssey and how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch.

"We're delighted that Singapore is now set to follow Wicked productions in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, the North American tour and London's West End," lead producers, Marc Platt and David Stone, said in a joint statement. "This will be the first time that Wicked will visit the South East Asian region, and we're absolutely sure that Singaporeans -- and visitors from around the region -- will be just as enchanted by Wicked as the audiences are in America, England, North Asia and Australia. Platt and Stone have partnered with Singapore's Base Entertainment, founded by Brian Becker and Scott Zeiger, and Marina Bay Sands, one of the leading business, leisure and entertainment complexes in Singapore, in bringing the smash musical to Asia.

Currently playing its 8th year at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway, Wicked's North American and international productions have comulatively grossed over $2.2 Billion and have been seen by nearly 28 million people worldwide.

Wicked features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz ("Defying Gravity," "Popular," and "For Good" are hit songs from the musical ) and book by Winnie Holzman.

Cheap Show Tickets by a Stroke of Luck

The Book of Mormon plays at Eugene O'Neill Theatre on 49th Street. Photo by Oliver Oliveros

SHOW producers, whether they’re the Broadway or Off Broadway kind, apply the economic model of supply and demand on their show ticket prices. When a show becomes unprecedentedly popular, its producers hike ticket prices as well. Take, for example, the growing cult following of The Book of Mormon (BOM): Lead producers Anne Garefino, Scott Rudin et. al. have raised BOM’s premium mezzanine tickets from $155 to $175 apiece (premium orchestra tickets are at $477 apiece nowadays!) since it won nine nods, including Best Musical, at the recent Tony Awards. However, don’t fret, wise theatergoers – big Broadway shows, which include BOM, occasionally release a bunch of cheap (sometimes free) tickets that are announced on various social media platforms, one of which is via Twitter.

BOM creators, Trey Parker (South Park), Robert Lopez (Avenue Q) and Matt Stone (South Park), owe the phenomenal success of their show, which parodies Mormonism and other religions, to avid South Park animation fans and young theatergoers who patiently wait in line for over five hours (rain or shine) to take a chance on standing room only tickets at every performance. So, Parker, Lopez, and Stone thought of holding a free fan performance three months ago. More than 13,000 BOM fans entered the show’s lottery, which first broke out on Twitter, for a chance to win tickets to the free performance.

Similarly, we had a recent stroke of luck that led us to discounted tickets to Off Broadway’s Silence! The Musical, an unauthorized parody of the horror film Silence of the Lambs. Producers Victoria Land, Rich Affannato et al. launched a contest on Twitter last summer, which asked followers to submit their ideas of a crazy pop song revival for a horror flick – the best ideas won discounted tickets to the show. We sent “Only In My Dreams,” popularized by Debbie Gibson in the ‘80s, which we thought would best fit one of Freddie Krueger’s franchise films. Lo and behold, we won the contest! We got the best seats in the theater at $29 apiece – and these seats are regularly sold at $48 each.

The Public Theater, which produces the Broadway revival of seminal rock musical Hair also recently tapped Twitter and other social media platforms to announce its promotional tickets. Hair, which tackles the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution during the ‘60s, gave special “move-in weekend” performances for Columbia University, Fordham University and New York University students and their families prior to the beginning of the fall term classes just two weeks ago. Each mezzanine ticket costs $20 apiece only.

And the list goes on…

Majority of Broadway and Off Broadway producers mean business. However, there are times that they’re extra-generous to the ticket-buying public as well.

We suggest that you start following these show producers on Twitter and other social media platforms too. You might end up hunting down Broadway and Off Broadway ticket surprises more than we do.

Hint: Start with @BookofMormonBWY, BOM'S official twitter page.

by Oliver Oliveros, BroadwayWorld.com

Co-written with Jude Cartalaba

Manila, Philippines, September 9, 2011 -- Resorts World Manila, a casino entertainment complex, held a press conference yesterday for its upcoming show titled Broadway Showstoppers, which will feature three of the country's finest International Artists: Leo Valdez (Miss Saigon) with special guests, Joanna Ampil (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables) and Ima Castro (Miss Saigon, In the Heights).

Leo, Joanna and Ima did three separate numbers at the press conference. Valdez did a medley of two songs titled "The Impossible Dream" and "This is the Moment" from two hit musicals -- Man of La Mancha and Jekyll and Hyde respectively. Ampil and Castro showcased their brilliant and unique powerful voices as Ampil performed "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar and as Castro performed "And I am Telling You I'm not Going" from Dreamgirls.

A younger breed of male and female vocalists will be joining the three seasoned thespians -- they are the all-female trio of Opera Belles and all-male trio of Primo. Their repertoire will include show tunes from Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Jesus Christ Superstar and Love Never Dies.

Broadway Showstoppers is part of Resorts World Manila's concert series and will be on Tuesday, September 27, 8 p.m., Newport Performing Arts Theater. Freddie Santos directs.

by Oliver Oliveros, BroadwayWorld.com

Manila, Philippines, September 3, 2011 -- The Philippine Educational Theater Association's (PETA) cast and creative team behind its original Filipino musical, William, felt very honoured because BBC News, a 24-hour UK news and broadcast organization, recently featured its production.

"A theater group in the Philippines takes a modern twist on Shakespeare, re-working the classics into a modern rap musical. The aim is to help young people to understand the playwright. William shows real life problems encountered by real students when it comes to learning Shakespearean masterpieces," BBC News' Marek Pruszewicz reported.

William uses Filipino poetry, wordplay and lyricism expressed through rap songs. Stage actor and playwright, Ron Capinding, writes its book and lyrics. Music composer, Jeff Hernandez, writes its music that fuses various music types, for example, rock, soul, funk, RnB, hip hop and Flip top rap.

Directed by PETA Artistic Director Maribel Legarda, William features Ian Segarra (Erwin), Inno Martin, Anj Heruela (Estella), Joan Bugcat, John Moran (Richard), Nathan Nunag, Norbs Portales III (TJ), Rico del Rosario, J-mee Katanyag (Sofia), Hapster Constantino, Julia Enriquez, Anna Luna, Meann Espinosa (Ms. Lutgarda Martinez), Jojo Atienza, Timee Gorecho, Elmer Cruz, Cheeno Macaraig, Carlon Matobato and Justin Mactal.
